Suffolk County Police Exam

In order to become a Suffolk County Police Officer, you must first pass a civil service exam.

Exam Details

The civil service exam does not require prior knowledge of the law or the Suffolk County Police Department. Instead, it is an aptitude test that will help evaluate your ability to succeed in performing the tasks required of the job. Once you’ve passed the civil service exam, you will be added to a list of certified applicants, which the department will reference when there are open positions.

Passing the test is not enough to guarantee employment. Depending on your test score and the hiring needs of the department, you will be invited to join the screening process for employment.

The test includes the following sections:

  1. Problem Sensitivity – identifying a problem and its logical solution
  2. Written Comprehension – deciphering information from a passage of text
  3. Written Expression – communicating effectively through writing
  4. Deductive Reasoning – applying logic to a scenario
  5. Inductive Reasoning – gathering pieces of information to form a conclusion
  6. Information Ordering – sequencing information appropriately

Exam Preparation

The best way to prepare for the Suffolk County Police Officer exam is to take practice tests that will expose you to the types of questions you’ll be expected to answer.

For example, in the deductive reasoning portion of the exam, you may be presented with the information given through witness statements and be tasked with answering questions on the logical next steps based on the information you know.

Look for a practice test that covers all of the listed sections. Then, time yourself while you take the practice exam. From there, you’ll be able to score yourself and understand where you can improve. This will help you feel confident on the day of the actual test and improve your score by removing the pressure from answering questions you might not have encountered.
