MTA Bus Operator and Train Conductor Exam Practice

MTA Bus Operators and Train Conductors help keep New York City’s public transportation running smoothly. Bus Operators and Train Conductors do not simply drive the vehicle from one place to another. They prepare vehicles for road service, move passengers over assigned routes, make announcements, and operate the vehicles between yards and terminals.

In order to secure one of these jobs, you’ll first need to pass an exam that tests your ability to perform functions that are absolutely crucial to keeping the public safe.

Exam Details

The Bus Operator and Train Conductor exams test your knowledge in areas such as customer service and safety. You’ll also need to demonstrate the ability to read and understand rules, regulations, and other relevant written material.

Other subject areas that will be on the exam are your reading and writing ability, and your problem-solving, memorization, mathematics, and reasoning skills.

You must get a score of at least 70% to pass. Once you’ve passed, you’ll be eligible to apply for an open position with the MTA. Of course, simply scoring a 70% does not guarantee that you will be hired. You will want to try to score as high as possible to improve your spot on the hiring list.

Exam Preparation

To prepare for the MTA Bus Operator and Train Conductor exams, you’ll want to take as many practice tests as possible to expose yourself to the types of questions you’ll be expected to answer on the day of the actual test.

You may be asked to read a set of regulations and use deductive reasoning to answer scenario-based questions. You’ll also be expected to memorize pieces of information and communicate effectively through your writing.

Look for a practice test that covers all of these. Then, time yourself while you take the practice exam. From there, you’ll be able to score yourself and understand where you can improve. This will help you feel confident on the day of the actual test and improve your score by removing the pressure from answering questions you might not have encountered.
